The state flag,
adopted in 1925, bears the state seal. The seal, adopted in 1859,
has 33 stars around it to show that Oregon was the 33rd state. The
seal includes an ox-drawn wagon to symbolize the settling of the
region by pioneers. The reverse side of Oregon's flag, not shown,
has an illustration of a beaver, the state animal. Oregon is the
only state whose flag has a different design on the reverse side.
Oregon, a Pacific Coast state of the United States, is known for
its vast forests of evergreen trees. Forests cover almost half the
state, and many large Oregon cities have factories that make wood
products. The state has about a tenth of the nation's timber, and
it ranks among the leading states in lumber production. |
