The state flag,
adopted in 1896, bears a version of the state seal. On the seal,
adopted in 1928, three plows on a shield represent agriculture. A
helmet symbolizing sovereignty and a crest with a horse's head
appear above the shield. Supporting the shield are Liberty, left,
and Ceres, right, the Roman goddess of grain and a symbol of
abundance.
New Jersey is a state of industrial cities and towns, glistening
beaches, and popular summer resorts. It is the fifth smallest
state of the United States. Only Hawaii, Connecticut, Delaware,
and Rhode Island have a smaller area. But New Jersey ranks ninth
in population among the states, and few states manufacture more
products or attract more vacationers. |
