The federal executive
department organized to administer the military establishment.
During the American Revolution, military affairs were largely
supervised by the Continental Congress, and under the Articles of
Confederation a secretary of war was put in charge of defense
matters. In Aug., 1789, the U.S. War Dept. was created to organize
and maintain the U.S. army under the command of the President in
time of peace and war. |
